Saving Money on an Online MBA

Sponsored Links | No Comment | Post a comment

Interested in pursuing the MBA online, but surprised at the cost? The least expensive MBA programs are at your local, state university. You are a state resident, so the cost can be a few hundred dollars per course and up. Maybe you don't want to attend your local, state school. The state MBA program may be too traditional and not accelerated enough for your needs. Or, the program doesn't have the concentration area you want or the time of class doesn't fit with your work schedule.

You may want to investigate a part-time, online MBA. These online MBA's are more expensive than your local, state university. Even your local university will charge extra fees for their online learning. If you like the looks of the MBA curriculum from a private university, get ready to pay between $1000 - $2000/class.

So, cutting costs may mean you attend a less-expensive MBA program, even if the time of classes, format or curriculum aren't perfect for you. Or, you can cut costs by taking your prerequisites in a less expensive way and make the total cost of the degree fit better with your budget.

You may need prerequisites or foundation classes before you start your MBA. If your undergraduate degree was in an area other than business or you graduated many years ago, you may need to take courses in Accounting, Economics, Statistics and Business Law. Some less expensive ways to gain these prerequisites are:

Community College
Don't overlook the community college for lower-division prerequisites. You can take accounting, economics, business law and statistics for a fraction of the cost of the online classes.
Extension Programs from Local Universities
Pre-MBA classes may be found at your local university's Extension, Extended Education or Continuing Education division.
Testing Out of Classes
If you have knowledge in these prerequisite subjects (accounting, for example), you may be able to test out of these classes at the MBA department of your university or test out with College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Check out the testing options CLEP has to offer at: [http://www.collegeboard.com/clep]www.collegeboard.com/clep

Not all MBA departments accept all these prerequisite options, but if they do, you can save thousands of dollars off the online MBA program.

Doctor of Business Administration - DBA - The New MBA?

Sponsored Links | 1 comments | Post a comment

Did you know that the US produces over 90,000 MBA graduates per year? And that the UK, the second largest producer, produces over 10,000 MBA graduates per year? Perhaps you signed up for an MBA thinking it would make you special but have found that in reality nearly everyone you work with also has an MBA? Indeed it could be said that the MBA has become a victim of its own success. No longer is the MBA a passport to promotion and financial success - it is now the minimum entry qualification for the company.

In a poll by the Association of MBA's 1300 respondents suggested that the reason they took an MBA was as follows: To obtain a business qualification (82%); To improve job opportunities (79%); For Intellectual stimulation (70%); To increase salary (67%) To obtain general skills (64%); To change career direction (61%); and, To increase self-confidence (52%). Unfortunately many graduates will discover that the chances of increasing their salaries or improving job opportunities upon graduation will not be realised. Indeed the substantial costs associated with taking an MBA has to be written off since companies will not see the MBA as a particular advantage over experience or other qualifications.

Enter the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). The DBA is a professional qualification that is designed to enable practitioners who already have a postgraduate degree such as an MBA to extend their learning and make a contribution to the body of knowledge of their practice area. Since the DBA is a practical course that requires candidates to research an area of business practice it is usually offered as a part time course for practising managers.

What is the difference between a DBA and a PhD? The DBA is a doctorate designed for experienced professionals based on the research of managerial issues. In contrast the PhD emphasises the development of new knowledge and theoretical perspectives. The DBA is a widely recognised qualification equivalent in standing to a PhD. As LJM University state, "Put simply, a PhD makes a contribution to knowledge whilst a DBA makes a contribution to knowledge in practice, in both cases this being new knowledge." According to the University of Surrey in the UK, "The DBA is right for today's business world. It is often better received in business than a narrow PhD Doctorate. This is because the approach is broader and the thesis takes a practical subject as its basis for the research study."

Typically a DBA is undertaken in two stages. The first is the taught component consisting of a number of business and research methodology modules designed to help the candidate develop both in-depth business knowledge and an understanding of the research process at the doctoral level. This stage can take one to two years and the candidate is usually required to produce and defend a research proposal. The second stage is the research component during which the candidate is required to produce a piece of original research with an emphasis on applied knowledge within the work environment. This can take between two to four years. Some institutions allow candidates to produce three separate papers rather than one thesis, the three papers being bound together and submitted for assessment as one piece of work once completed. The bound work is then sent for external examination and viva (defence). A successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the contribution that their research makes to management practice.

The DBA is offered by many universities around the world. However, when choosing a course it is important to ensure that it is from a recognised university - look for accreditation from European organisations such as EQUIS and EDAMBA, or from the American AACSB. The application process will usually involve the potential candidate completing an application form and research proposal. The proposal will ensure that the university can supervise your area of business practice, an important consideration if you work in a highly specialised field. It should also demonstrate that you have a basic knowledge of the research process. Candidates should already have an MBA or equivalent business Master's degree and be able to demonstrate that they have experience of management at a senior level, or substantial professional experience. Non-native speakers of English would normally be expected to have an IELTS level of 7.0 or equivalent.

The DBA is therefore a natural progression for those who have completed their MBA. It builds on the foundation of an MBA and adds much more. It is exclusive and very few managers have one. As a result the Doctor of Business Administration is set to replace the MBA as the 'must have' qualification in corporate life - and unlike the invisible MBA, it allows you to put 'Doctor' on your business card! What better way to stand out from the crowd?

Regional and Professional Accreditation

Sponsored Links | No Comment | Post a comment

Colleges Need Both Regional and Professional Accreditation

On July 31, a major newspaper that serves the Greater Washington, D. C., area ran a story about an Internet-based "diploma mill" that operated out of Washington state. The organization, run by a 58-year-old woman and two members of her family, grossed $6 million from 1999 to 2005. It has now been shut down by Washington state officials, though others are believed to still exist.

The diploma mill sold college degrees from St. Regis University, Ameritech University and James Monroe University. It also sold counterfeit diplomas from George Washington University, the University of Maryland and Texas A&M University.

Young adults should be mindful of the problem of diploma mills as they prepare for college this fall. To protect themselves, they should deal only with institutions that have both regional and professional accreditation in their chosen field of study.

Generally, students are safe if they attend a college or university that has been accredited by one of the six major regional accrediting associations. In Virginia, that means the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The names of the other accrediting associations are available from the U. S. Department of Education or from the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

But regional accreditation is only a first step. Students must then determine if the school they will be attending has professional accreditation as well. That means that the school has passed a rigorous evaluation by professionals in the field. Some of the more common professional accrediting groups are:

Business. The accrediting organization for schools of business is the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Fortunately, most of the major universities in Virginia meet AACSB standards. However some universities do not. If you are unsure, go to the AACSB web site and click on accreditation.

Nursing. The National League for Nursing Accreditation evaluates nursing programs throughout the United States. The organization "is nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the accrediting agency for postsecondary and higher degree nursing programs."

Public Administration. Only four colleges in Virginia have undergraduate public administration programs that have been approved by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration: the College of William & Mary, George Mason University, James Madison University and Virginia State University.

Liberal Arts. A recent addition to the list of accrediting organizations is the American Academy for Liberal Education. St. John's College in Annapolis and Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista have been approved by AALE. Other major public universities throughout Virginia have excellent liberal arts programs that will soon be accredited by AALE.

Applied Science. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology is "the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. . . [It] is a federation of 28 professional and technical societies representing these fields."

Architecture. In my state, only three universities have been accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board to award Bachelor of Architecture degrees: Hampton University, University of Virginia and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Education
.
The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education is the "professional accrediting organization for schools, colleges, and departments of education in the United States. It is a coalition of over 30 organizations representing teachers, teacher educators, policymakers, and the public."

Online programs. All students should be aware that accrediting organizations tend to look with disfavor on educational programs that rely exclusively on Internet technology. Some of these online schools have regional accreditation, but they cannot get professional accreditation because exams are open-book and unproctored. Further, students at such institutions often "share" the assignments and workload. Students may discover, to their chagrin, that a diploma from such a school is essentially worthless.

Colleges and Universities in the United Kingdom

Sponsored Links | No Comment | Post a comment

There are over 350 accredited colleges and universities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (United Kingdom). Courses in all major disciplines are offered at these universities. One can find a UK college or university that has to offer courses in social sciences, medicine, engineering, computing, modern languages, cultural and regional studies, business studies, and so on. The cost of undergraduate study in UK is around £3000 per year for local and European Economic Area students; international students pay around £10K-£12K per year for undergraduate studies.

United Kingdom is a prime destination for overseas students from Asia , Middle East and Africa. Overseas students may engage in work for up to 20 hours per week during a semester without prior approval. Students who are given leave to remain for more than 12 months are eligible for medical services offered by NHS. Recent amendments to immigration rules allow graduating students to apply for and hold jobs for up to 12 months after graduation. Under newly points based immigration system, applicants with UK qualifications are granted points.

British Council, a UK based charity, through its local offices worldwide provides counseling to prospective students and trains foreign teachers in English languages courses. IELTS exams are held under the supervision of British Council offices in many countries. British Council provides basic visa related information to students and in certain circumstances acts as a liaison between students and Visa Section of British High Commissions.

Although one can Google a course name to get search results, such a search may not yield the intended results.
