Founded in 1899, Western Illinois University (WIU) is a leading public university offering a wide range of academic programs at undergraduate and graduate level.

The University has the following academic colleges: College of Arts & Sciences; College of Business & Technology; College of Education & Human Services; College of Fine Arts & Communication.

Western Illinois University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. The teacher certification programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). - Western Illinois University is placed among Tier 1 Regional Universities (Midwest) (USNWR 2011).

- Ranked 62nd among the Tier 1 Master's Universities (Midwest) by US News & World Report (2010). It is among 20 public universities included in the Midwest top tier of 74 masters institutions.

- For the fifth consecutive year, WIU has been named one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest by The Princeton Review. It was selected as one of 158 institutions it profiles in The Princeton Review's 2010 Best Colleges "Best in the Midwest" section.

- It was designated as a "Military Friendly School" by G.I. Jobs Magazine, and is also recognized as one of only two Illinois public universities for the Center for Student Opportunity's (CSO) "College Access and Opportunity Guide" for its retention of first-generation and low-income students.
