Top Universities in South America

University of São Paulo is the top ranked South American university (rated 178th globally) according to the Times Higher Education 2011-2012 world university rankings, followed by State University of Campinas (2nd in South America and top 300 in the world), and Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (ranked in the world's top 400).

University of São Paulo is also ranked highly in another league table, QS World University Rankings 2011/2012, tied for 169th with Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2010, it is placed in the group of 101-151st among the world's top universities.

State University of Campinas is also ranked highly in another two international league tables:
- Ranked among the world's top 300 universities in the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
- Ranked 235th overall in the world and in the world top 200 for the following subjects: Natural Sciences (152nd), Engineering & IT (152nd), Arts & Humanities (171st), according to the QS World University Rankings 2011.

The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (UC or PUC) is one of eight Catholic universities in Chile, and one of 61 institutions within the Chilean university system. It has been ranked among the top five universities in the Spanish speaking world.
