According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2012, Harvard University was ranked No. 1 among the world's top universities and ahead of Stanford University (2nd globally). In Europe, the top rated university is Cambridge (ranked 5th globally), followed by the University of Oxford (2nd in the region and 10th globally) and University College London (3rd in the region and 21st globally).
