Top Universities in Scotland

There are 14 leading universities in Scotland, some of which are ranked highly in the international league tables such as THES, ARWU, Newsweek, Wuhan University Ranking, etc.

University of St Andrews
Founded in 1413, University of St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland. It is one of the highest ranked institutions in Scotland. It is ranked 14th in the UK and 2nd in Scotland for the quality of its research across Science and the Arts, according to the latest RAE 2008. It is placed in the Top 5 by the Push League Table 2008.

Heriot-Watt University
Heriot-Watt is ranked in the Top 4 regionally by the Complete University Guide 2010, moving up 3 places from 7th to 4th in Scotland. It is the top 35 Universities in the UK, when taking into account both submission rates and RAE outcomes.

University of Glasgow
Founded in 1451, Glasgow is one of the world's leading universities with strong international reputation in teaching and research. It is placed 26th nationally in the Independent Complete University Guide 2010. It is one of 17 UK universities made it to the THES Top 100 universities.

University of Aberdeen
Founded in 1495, Aberdeen is ranked 33rd in the Daily Telegraph, 23rd in Guardian University Guide 2009, and 26th in The Times 2009. It is in the Top 8 for German Language by The Times 2008.

University of Edinburgh
Established in 1583, Edinburgh is one of the best ranked institution in the world. It is rated 7th in Europe and 60th globally in the Webometrics Ranking 2008. It is placed 23rd in the world by THES 2008. In the UK, Edinburgh is rated 7th for Art and Design, Architecture, and Italian Language,  It is also rated 7th in the ranking of Current EPSRC Grants to Mathematics and Statistics Departments.

University of Strathclyde
Strathclyde is a Top 30 UK university, ranked 29th by Guardian 2009. Strathclyde MBA is ranked 7th in UK, 13th in Europe and 30th globally by the Financial Times MBA League Table 2008. it is placed 8th for Mechanical Engineering by Times 2008.

University of Dundee
Dundee is a Top 40 research institution, according to the RAE 2008 Rating. It is ranked 6th for Dentistry and 3rd for Civil Engineering by The Times 2008. Dundee is the top ranked medical school in the UK.

University of Stirling
Stirling is rated 38th in the Daily Telegraph 2007, and top 3 in the Push League Table 2008. It is placed 36th in the UK by the Financial Times 2003.

Edinburgh Napier University
Napier is ranked 64th in the country by the Times Good University Guide 2009. It is placed 21st for General Engineering by the Times 2008.

Robert Gordon University
The university was named 'The Best Modern University in the UK' by The Times Good University Guide 2009. It is rated 21st for Art and Design in 2009.

University of the West of Scotland (formerly known as University of Paisley)
It is placed 41st for Mechanical Engineering by the Times 2008.

Glasgow Caledonian University
Glasgow Caledonian is rated Scotland’s best international student experience for the fourth time in a row. It is rated top in Scotland and in the top 20 nationally for research in construction and the built environment by RAE 2008.

University of Abertay Dundee
UAD is the top-rated university in Scotland for research in environmental sciences (RAE 2001). It is the top UK university for its expenditure on student computer.

Queen Margaret University
Queen Margaret is one of the top 10 modern universities in the UK. It won a prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in 2002.
