University of Edinburgh in RAE Top 5 Ranking

The University of Edinburgh is one of the world's top leading research universities, with 63% of the University’s research activity is in the highest categories (4* and 3*), according to the RAE 2008.

Edinburgh is ranked in the Top 5 in the UK and Number One in Scotland by volume of 4* 'world-leading' research.

The university is the largest research grouping in the UK — 44% larger than its nearest competitor.

RAE Rankings and Ratings:

- Edinburgh Law School is ranked 5th in the UK and 1st in Scotland on 4* quality by volume measure, and 8th in the UK and 1st in Scotland on 4*  and 3* by volume measure.

- The School of Engineering is ranked 3rd in the UK and 1st in Scotland in research quality and quantity.

-3rd in the UK and top in Scotland for English Literature (with 70% of research of 4* or 3* quality).

- Joint 3rd place in the UK (with Oxford and UCL) for Theology.

- 18 units of assessment are in the top 10 in the UK, and 11 are top in Scotland.

- University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art made a joint return which is comfortably in the top 10 for the UK.

- Top for research in Informatics and Computer Science, delivering more world-leading (4*) research than anyone else — 69% more than our nearest competitor.

- 3rd for biomedical, ranked by 4* and 3* outputs and by Grade Point Average.
