Birmingham in World Top 100

University of Birmingham is one of the most popular 'Red Brick' university in Britain. It is a member of the Russell Group and Universitas 21. It was granted a Royal Charter by Queen Victoria in 1900.

University Ranking Achievements:

- ranked 12th in Europe and 75th in the world in the THES 2008 World University Rankings

- placed 11th in the UK, 30th in Europe and 91st globally in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University 2008. In 2007 the university was placed 92nd globally.

- According to Times Good University Guide, it is ranked 26th in 2008, 25th in 2009, and 22nd in 2010.

- In Guardian University Guide, it is ranked 18th in 2008, 30th in 2009, and 24th in 2010.

- 27th in the UK, according to the 2010 Independent Complete University Guide.

- 24th nationally in Sunday Times University Guide 2008.

- 31st in Daily Telegraph 2007.

- 26th nationally in RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) 2008.

- The Research Fortnight's University Power Ranking puts the University of Birmingham as the West Midlands' top university and 12th in the UK. 90% of the University of Birmingham’s research has global reach with 16% as world leading (4*) and 41% as internationally excellent (3*). The university has achieved excellent ratings in a number of disciplines:
  • Music is ranked 2nd nationally (With 85% of its research ranked either world-leading or internationally excellent).
  • Mechanical Engineering is rated 7th in terms of its world-leading and internationally excellent research.
  • European Studies is rated 2nd for its 4* research.
