University of Sheffield -Top in Research
The University of Sheffield is a Top 10 Research University in the UK, placed No. 9 in the RAE Ranking by Research Power in 2008.
The following subjects rated 1st amongst UK Higher Education Institutions for the quality of their research: Information Studies, Politics and Town and Regional Planning. Another eleven subjects were ranked in the top five: Architecture, Automatic and Control Systems Engineering, Biological Sciences, Clinical Dentistry, French, Human Communication Sciences, Landscape, Mechanical Engineering, Music, Philosophy and Russian and Slavonic Studies.
RAE 2008 Outcomes:
- 4th among the UK dental schools, with 70% of the research of The School of Clinical Dentistry graded as `world-leading´ or `internationally excellent´.
- 60% of the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering´s research activity was classed as either world-leading or internationally excellent, and nearly all (95%) was classed as being internationally recognised and higher.
- The Department of Computer Science is ranked 15th out of 81 departments in the UK, with 65% of research work rated as world leading or internationally excellent in terms of its originality, significance and rigour.
- Biological Sciences at Sheffield was ranked joint 3rd in the UK based on average quality score.
- Music at Sheffield rated joint 4th in the UK, according to the RAE 2008 GPA rating.
- Archaeology has been placed in the top ten among all UK departments.
- The Department of Politics is placed 1st equal amongst all politics departments in the UK, with 75% of research graded in the top 4* (world leading) and 3* (internationally excellent) categories.
- The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics is placed 7th equal out of 87 English departments in the UK.
- 2nd in the country for Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (Times Higher Education, 18 December 2008).
- The Department of Journalism Studies is one of the best in the country , with 75% of the department´s research outputs graded as 4* or 3*.
- The Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies is one of the three top UK research departments in the field, with 70% of our research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
- The Department of Animal and Plant Sciences was ranked 3rd in the UK for Biological Sciences in the RAE.
- Sheffield Law School's research is of international quality, with 85% of research rated as International Quality, 15% of which was world leading.
