Top Physics Programs - US & UK

MIT graduate physics program is tied for first with Stanford, according to the US News Graduate Schools rankings. Four institutions are ranked equal third in the subject: Caltech, Harvard, Princeton and UC Berkeley. The Physics Department at Stanford University is one of the best in the world, with five Nobel Laureates and fifteen members of the National Academy of Science.

In the UK, Oxford is the best ranked school for Physics, followed by Birmingham (2nd) and UCL (3rd), according to the Guardian Subject League Table 2010.

Lancaster Physics Department is in the Top 20 nationally and it also achieved outstanding performance in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008, ranked No. 1 among the 42 UK physics departments. In the previous RAE (2001), it achieved the highest rating of 5*A.

The University of Birmingham is ranked highly for Physics - No.2 in Guardian and in top five for the quality of its 4* research activity in the RAE 2008.

Heriot-Watt Physics Department is listed as 'top UK Physics department for Graduate Prospects' in Times Good University Guide. It is also rated as 'Top Scottish Department' and 5th in the UK, according to the Guardian University Guide for Undergraduate Teaching 2009. Its Physics Department research is ranked equal 15th in the UK, alongside Oxford and Southampton, in the RAE 2008.
