Following are the top accredited universities offering the Distance Learning PhD Programs:

Capella University
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programs are offered in the following schools: School of Business and Technology; School of Education; School of Human Services; Harold Abel School of Psychology; School of Public Service Leadership.
- In a 2005 alumni survey, 89% of respondents say they use new skills gained at Capella in their careers.

Indiana State University
- The distance program: doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in technology management is offered through ISU's College of Technology in cooperation with a consortium of four other universities.

- It is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Nova Southeastern University
- The Department of Occupational Therapy at NSU offers the research doctorate: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by Distance Education.
- Students will travel to the NSU campus once each semester for intensive course work.
- The core curriculum for the PhD includes core courses, electives, doctoral research courses, residency, and a dissertation.
- Courses in the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy in Occupational Therapy) program are organized into four areas of focus: Leadership, Advanced practice, Entrepreneurship, and Research.

University of Utah
- The University of Utah College of Nursing offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Distance Program.
- All course work applied to the degree must be completed within seven years.
- The College of Nursing is a member of the Western Commission for Higher Education in Nursing and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

University of Florida
- The Department of Classics offers the PhD in Latin and Roman Studies and PhD in Classical Civilization by distance learning.
- The University of Florida is the state's oldest, largest and most comprehensive university.

University of Leicester (UK)
- It offers the PhD by distance learning, launched in January 2005. All research students in the School of Law become members of the University Graduate School.
- The School of Law is regularly placed amongst the 20 best in the country.
- The University of Leicester was granted its Royal Charter in 1957.

Aston University (UK)
- It offers the PhD in Applied Linguistics by distance learning.
- Entry requirements and application procedures are the same as for on-campus programmes.
- It is ranked 13th out of 113 UK Universities by the 2010 Complete University Guide.
