The University of Ilorin is the highest ranked university in Nigeria, according to the Webometrics Ranking of Top Colleges and Best Universities of Nigeria (July 2010), followed by Obafemi Awolowo University in second place nationally.

University of Ilorin was one of the seven institutions of higher learning established by a decree of the Federal Military Government in August, 1975. The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is a leading comprehensive public institution established in 1962 as The University of Ife.
