James Cook University (JCU) is Australia’s leading tropical research university and Queensland’s second oldest university with strong reputation for excellence in teaching and research. It is a member of the select group, Innovative Research Universities Australia, one of only three university alliances recognised by the peak body Universities Australia.
JCU has the following faculties: Faculty of Law, Business & Creative Arts; Faculty of Arts, Education & Social Sciences; Faculty of Medicine, Health & Molecular Sciences; Faculty of Science & Engineering.
In 2006 the School of Engineering was awarded professional accreditation by Engineers Australia, and the Bachelor of Marine Science gained a 5-year accreditation from the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, the first university program to gain this level of accreditation outside of Europe.

The ARWU is an independent assessment published by the Institute of Higher Education of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University and ranks universities by several indicators of academic or research performance.
- James Cook University is recognised as one of Queensland’s top universities according to the 2010 edition of the Good Universities Guide. In a number of key areas, the University is equal with the best in Australia achieving a five-star rating. The Guide gave JCU its top rating in graduates getting a full time job, positive graduate outcomes, access by equity groups, indigenous participation, and gender balance.
