Central University of Venezuela is the highest ranked institution in Venezuela (ranked 400th in the world) according to the 4icu.org world university rankings 2010, followed by University of the Andes (rated 702nd globally). The Central University of Venezuela (or Universidad Central de Venezuela) is the oldest university in Venezuela and one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. The University of the Andes (Universidad de Los Andes, ULA) is the second oldest university in Venezuelaa and is the largest public university in the Venezuelan Andes, with one of the largest student bodies in the country.

According to the Webometrics rankings of world universities in July 2010, University of the Andes is the best ranked institution in Venezuela (with a ranking of 733rd in the world).
