The top leading universities in Pune (India) are the University of Pune, Symbiosis International University, Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, among others.

The University of Pune (formerly known as University of Poona) is highly regarded as one of the premier universities in India. It offers excellent programs in various areas including Science, Commerce, Arts, Languages and Management Studies. The university attracts many foreign students due to its excellent facilities. Symbiosis International University (SIU) has been given official recognition by the UGC and the AICTE. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has conferred an 'A' grade to the University. Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University started officially functioning on 26 April 1996 after receiving communication from the Government of India granting the status of ‘University’ under section of the UGC Act, 1996 to a cluster of twelve institutions of Bharati Vidyapeeth.

Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth was established in 1921 as an education a memorial of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. It was awarded the status of the "Deemed to be University" in the year 1987. The award of the Deemed University status accorded the Vidyapeeth recognition at the national level. All the degrees awarded by the Vidyapeeth are as per the norms and guidelines of UGC, DEC and NCTE.
