Colleges with a Conscience

The college guidebook "Colleges with a Conscience" is compiled by The Princeton Review and Campus Compact, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting community service, civic engagement and service learning in higher education. Some of the leading colleges featured in the guidebook include:

- Elon University is one of 81 institutions in 33 states that The Princeton Review commends and features in its book "Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement". Criteria for selection included: college admissions practices and scholarships rewarding community service; support for service-learning programs, student activism, and student voice in school governance; and level of social engagement of its student body. Elon is one of four schools chosen from North Carolina. The other schools are Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

- James Madison University (JMU) was selected as a "college with a conscience," one of 81 of the nation's best colleges for fostering social responsibility and public service. It is the only Virginia college featured in the 2005 book, Colleges With A Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement, published by Random House/Princeton Review Books. Colleges were selected for "both an administration committed to social responsibility and a student body actively engaged in serving society".

- DePaul University was recognized as one of the country's best universities for fostering social responsibility and public service in the 2005 national guidebook "Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement". The authors cited several programs and characteristics that made DePaul stand out, including its Community-based Service Learning program.

- The Princeton Review named Brandeis University one of "81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement" for its record of having excellent service-learning programs and blending academics with community work.
