US universities are usually rated among the very best in the world, with Harvard University consistently rated top in many international league tables such as the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

According to the Ranking Web of World Universities (July 2011), Massachusetts Institute of Technology is rated top in the world and ahead of Harvard University (2nd), Stanford University (3rd), and Cornell University (4th).

According to the QS World University Rankings 2011/12, Harvard University is the top rated university in the US (ranked 2nd globally, behind the University of Cambridge, UK), followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 3rd place globally.
