University of Oslo is the highest ranked university in Norway (rated 181st in the world) according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011-2012. The University of Bergen is ranked 2nd in Norway and 191st in the world, followed by Norwegian University of Science and Technology (251-275th) and University of Tromsø (276-300th).

The University of Bergen is also ranked highly in the QS World University Rankings 2011, with an overall rank of 121st in the world. Additionally, it is ranked among the world's best institutions for a number of subjects: Social Sciences (177th), Arts & Humanities (188th), Natural Sciences (239th), Life Sciences (239th).

Norwegian University of Science and Technology is ranked 266th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2011, and in the global top 400 for the following subjects: Engineering & IT (146th), Natural Sciences (328th), Life Sciences (376th).
