List of top ranked universities in the USA for 2012:

U.S.News & World Report 2012 - Princeton University and Harvard University tied for the 1st place among the top-ranked National Universities in U.S.News 2012 rankings of Best Colleges, followed by Yale University in 3rd place nationally and Columbia University in 4th place nationally. California Institute of Technology shares the 5th position with four other universities, namely Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Chicago, and University of Pennsylvania.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2011-2012) - California Institute of Technology is ranked 1st in the world and ahead of Harvard University (tied for 2nd place globally with Stanford University). Princeton University is ranked 4th in the USA and 5th in the world.

QS World University Rankings 2011/2012 - Harvard University is rated 1st in the US and 2nd in the world, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (3rd globally) and Yale University (4th globally). Other US universities in the top 10 list include: University of Chicago (8th), University of Pennsylvania (9th), and Columbia University (10th).
