League Table Leap for Heriot-Watt University

Heriot-Watt University has leapt up 30 places in the latest Guardian University League Table 2010, moving up to 22nd place overall, ahead of other leading institutions such as Nottingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, King's College London and Sheffield.

Out of 118 UK institutions, Heriot-Watt is in the Top 10 nationally for modern languages (ranked 2nd in Scotland), and in the Top 20 for the following subjects:
  • Arts and Design
  • Building and Town and Country Planning
  • Business and Management Studies
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Psychology
  • Sports Science
Heriot-Watt also leapt up from 49th to 39th overall in the Complete University Guide 2010, and the university is placed among the Top 4 in Scotland, following St Andrews, Edinburgh and  Glasgow.

It was placed 45th nationally in the Sunday Times University Guide 2010.

In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, Heriot-Watt moved up 9 places in The Times Higher Education ranking and more than doubled the proportion of Heriot-Watt research results which are rated as being internationally excellent, from 24% to 50%. Heriot-Watt Physics has improved significantly in the RAE ratings, rising to equal 15th position, on par with Oxford and Southampton.

It was rated 24th of 101 universities in the 2008 Times Higher Education Supplement Survey of Student Experience at University.
