A number of institutions has made significant improvement in the ranking.

- Durham is the Top 5 university now, up a place from the 2009 league table.
- Edinburgh and Southampton moved into Top 20 this year.
- Robert Gordon moved up from 61st to Top 50.
- Heriot-Watt University moved into Top 40 in the UK and Top 4 in Scotland this year, ahead of Strathclyde, Aberdeen and Dundee.
- Hertfordshire jumped up from 54th to 45th.
- Liverpool up from 42nd to 34th.
- Leeds moved into Top 30 (from 32nd).
- SOAS dropped from Top 10 to 15th now.
- Leicester from 12th to 20th.
- Glasgow from 16th to 26th.
- Loughborough from 13th to 18th.
- Essex from 25th to 30th.
