The University of Bolton is a leading university for teaching quality, consistently won the highest ratings possible from the Government's quality control agency. It was formerly known as Bolton Institute of Higher Education.
The university offers a comprehensive range of courses from HNDs and foundation degrees to undergraduate certificates, diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate masters and doctorates. It also offers a wide range of both full-time and part-time professional development courses, as well as a range of short courses which can be taken as professional development.
Bolton has the following Academic Schools and Research Centres:

The University has formed a partnership with Institute of Financial Accountants (IFA) to offer the BA (Honours) Degree in Accountancy for Associate and Fellow Members of the IFA.

- 112th nationally in The Complete University Guide 2009 and 2010.
- Top 40 in the UK for History Degree Courses (Times 2009).
- Ranked top in the north-west for student satisfaction according to The Times Good University Guide 2008. It is placed in the top 15 of all UK universities when it comes to student satisfaction.
- Placed within the regions' top five universities for the number of students who find graduate-level jobs or carry on with their education six months after graduation (Times 2008).
- 69th nationally in The Push League Table 2008.
- The mechanical engineering course is placed in the country's top three when it comes to meeting students' needs (Sunday Times University Guide 23 September 2007).
- Placed at the top of the building subject area's nationwide league table in the Times Higher Education Supplement's National Student Survey (14 September 2007).
- Received the highest level of recommendation possible in the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) institutional audit (published 2006).
- Received QAA 'excellent' ratings for subjects including biology, education, health studies, nursing, philosophy, psychology and textiles.
- Named the UK's Fastest Growing New University (Guardian,2005).
