Founded in 1822, Athens State University is the oldest institution of higher education in Alabama 's state educational system.
Athens State University’s College of Business, is the first baccalaureate degree business program in Alabama, to be offered completely online. It offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Science degree with majors in accounting, management, the management of technology, and human resources management.
The College of Education offers undergraduate degree leading to Class B Certification in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Health Education, Special Education, and Secondary Trade and Industry.
The College of Arts and Sciences is composed of the following departments: Behavioral Science, Humanities and Social Science, Health and Professional Studies, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Natural Science.
Athens State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The College of Business is nationally accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), and its curriculum complies with the Common Professional Component (CPC) recommended by the ACBSP. The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The University is approved by the Alabama State Department of Education for the training of elementary, secondary, and post secondary school teachers. The Alabama State Department of Education is a member of the National Association of State Directors of Teachers Education Certification.
