Top Liberal Arts Colleges in Virginia

According to the US News & World Report's Liberal Arts Rankings, Washington and Lee University is a Top 20 liberal arts schools in the nation, placed 17th nationally in 2009 (the highest ranked school in the state of Virginia). University of Richmond is ranked second best in the state (33rd nationally), followed by Virginia Military Institute (71st) and Sweet Briar College (84th).

Washington and Lee University achieved a top 20 position in the US News & World Report. It is rated 25th in the US News ranking of law schools 2008. In the Princeton Review 2007 edition, Washington and Lee was ranked 4th for "Professors Get High Marks" and 6th for "Professor Accessibility." Washington and Lee is divided into three schools: (1) The College, (2) the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics, and (3) the School of Law.

University of Richmond is a Top tier Liberal Arts College. It is rated as one of the “25 Hottest Schools in America” by Newsweek, and among the nation’s “100 Best Value Colleges” in the USA Today-Princeton Review. According to Businessweek, Robins School of Business was ranked 12th nationally and tied for first in academic quality.

Virginia Military Institute is ranked No. 3, after the United States Naval Academy and the United States Military Academy, in the US News and World Report ranking of the 27 top public liberal arts colleges in the country (it is placed 71st overall, among all the public and private liberal arts colleges). It is also ranked highly in the subject league tables, placed 7th in Civil Engineering program, 14th in Mechanical Engineering program, and 21st for Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs.
