Founded in 1960, The University of California, San Diego (UCSD or UC San Diego) is a top public research university located in La Jolla, San Diego, California (USA). It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The university is organized into the following Divisions & Schools: Arts & Humanities, Biological Sciences, Intl' Relations/Pacific Studies, Jacobs School of Engineering, Physical Sciences, Rady School of Management, School of Medicine, Scripps Inst. of Oceanography, Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Social Sciences. UCSD's undergraduate division is organized into six residential colleges: Revelle College, John Muir College, Thurgood Marshall College, Earl Warren College, Eleanor Roosevelt College, and Sixth College.

The university was admitted to the Association of American Universities in 1982.


- The Jacobs School of Engineering is ranked 13th in the US News America’s Best Graduate Schools, 2011 Edition.

- 7th best public university in the nation and 35th among the 262 ranked national universities, both public and private, in the USNWR 2010 America’s Best Colleges. It was listed in 15th place among 77 colleges and universities in the“Top Up-and-Coming School” category. The Jacobs School of Engineering was placed 4th in the Biomedical/Biomedical Engineering category.

- 12th in the US News Graduate Engineering Rankings 2010.

- 31st in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2009.

- According to the Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings, it is placed 44th in 2006, 58th in 2007 and 58th in 2008.

- 14th globally in the Academic Ranking of World Universities compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2008. It is also placed 19th in Natural Science & Math, 14th in Life Sciences, 25th in Clinical Medicine, 26th in Social Sciences, 10th in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences.

- 7th best public university in the nation and 35th among the nation’s top 262 universities in the 2009 U.S. News & World Report. The School of Medicine is placed 6th among the nation’s public medical schools. The Jacobs School of Engineering is placed 6th among the nation’s public engineering schools. It is also ranked 15th among national universities in the category of “Up and Coming Schools”.

- In the USNWR “Best Hospitals” 2009 issue, The UC San Diego Medical Center is placed among the best in the nation in six specialty areas: respiratory disorders; rheumatology; kidney disorders; cancer; urology; psychiatry.

- Selected as the "Hottest" science school by Newsweek and the 2006 Kaplan/Newsweek College Guide.

- Named the 2nd best university in the nation by the Washington Monthly’s 2007 College Guide.
