Top UK Universities for English

Following are some of the top UK universities for English Degree Courses:

University of Sussex
- The School of English at Sussex includes Drama Studies and English literature and English Language.
- The Higher Education Funding Council's assessment of teaching quality rated the English department 'excellent' and the department also received 5 out of 5 in the UK government's 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.

Queen Mary, University of London
- The Department of English at Queen Mary is one of the country's leading centres for literary study.
- English at Queen Mary has been rated joint 2nd in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Nearly three quarters (70%) of the research activity in the Department was judged to be of "world leading" or "internationally excellent" quality. Based on a grade point average score, English at Queen Mary is ranked equal with Manchester and Edinburgh, second only to York.

University of York
- York is officially recognised as the UK's best Department of English for research. The findings of a panel of top academics reading submissions by 87 departments for the 2008 RAE have led to York being positioned at the top of the league table for research quality.
- A high proportion of York graduate students go on to do MPhil/PhD research in the Department.

The University of Liverpool
- The RAE 2008 has confirmed the leading international status of the School of English, rating no less than 65% of its research activity world-leading or internationally excellent, and virtually all the remainder internationally recognised.

University of Leeds
- The School of English at the University of Leeds is one of the top ranked departments in the country. Judged 'excellent' in its teaching, and amongst the top 10 English departments in the country for research (RAE 2008, GPA 2.95; RAE 2001, 5*A).
- Members of the School have been successful in attracting research grants from the British Academy, AHRC and Leverhulme Trust.
