Dutch Universities in Top Rankings

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the top ranked Dutch university in the QS World University Rankings 2010, rated 56th globally, followed by Leiden University (82nd), Utrecht University (83rd) and Erasmus University Rotterdam (99th).

In addition, the University of Amsterdam is ranked highly in the following subjects: Arts & Humanities (29th), Social Sciences (32nd), Life Sciences (50th), Natural Sciences (69th), and Engineering & IT (123rd).

A total of 4 Dutch universities ranked in the QS top 100. Universities are assessed according to the following criteria: research quality (peer review), quality of teaching, the staff-student ratio, internationalisation, and the employability of graduates in the job market.

Leiden University is another top leading universities in the country. It is the second highest ranked Dutch university in the QS World Rankings 2010.

In the Shanghai University’s ‘Academic Ranking of World Universities 2010’, Leiden is rated 70th in the global top 100. In 2009, Leiden was in 72nd position. The Universities of Utrecht and Leiden are the only Dutch Universities in the top 100 list. There are 12 Dutch universities in the World's Top 500.

Utrecht University is ranked 50th among the world's best institutions (ARWU 2010). It is in 11th position in Europe and has topped the list in the Netherlands for several years. Utrecht University scores particularly well on the citation indices and in terms of the number of publications in Nature and Science.
