Southern University and A&M College is a publicly supported, accredited, historical land-grant university located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA.

Music programs in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The Department of Mass Communications is accredited by the Association for Education of Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC). The Department of Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The Division of Family and Consumer Sciences is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of the American Association and Family and Consumer. The Didactic Program in Dietetics has Developmental Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association.

The curricula in the Departments of Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc (ABET). The Scientific and Information Systems Options in the Department of Computer Science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET, Inc.

The School of Law is approved by the American Bar Association. The Teacher Education Program is approved by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. The Department of Chemistry is approved by the American Chemical Society.

Notable alumni of the University include: Trenidad Hubbard (former Major League Baseball player), Godwin Turk (former NFL player), Aeneas Williams (former NFL Pro Bowler), Melvin "Kip" Holden (First African-American mayor of Baton Rouge, Louisiana), Brittany Brown (Miss Black Louisiana USA, 2009-2010), etc.
