Australian Financial Review (AFR) Rankings

The Australian Financial Review (AFR) has published its inaugural ranking of the best universities in Australia, which is based on five key categories: student satisfaction, research performance, global reputation, career impact, and fairness and opportunity. This new ranking aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the top institutions in Australia, not only considering academic reputation but also how universities perform in preparing students for their careers and fostering inclusivity.

The top 12 universities in the AFR rankings are: the University of Queensland, the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the Australian National University (ANU), Monash University, the University of Adelaide, Edith Cowan University (ECU), Deakin University, the University of Melbourne, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), the University of Wollongong (UOW), the University of Sydney, the University of South Australia, and Bond University.

Among these, UNSW stands out as the university with the best career outcomes in Australia, ranking second overall in the AFR list. UNSW has been particularly recognized for its strong performance in preparing students for successful careers, which significantly contributed to its position as the leader in career impact across Australia.

Edith Cowan University, located in Perth, Western Australia, also made a strong showing, ranking in the top ten of the AFR's inaugural rankings. ECU's position as the sixth-best university in Australia is a noteworthy achievement, as it is the only university from Western Australia to make it into the top ten, highlighting its growing reputation and quality across various performance indicators.

The University of Wollongong (UOW) is another standout institution in this ranking, placed among Australia's top universities and sharing seventh position with other leading institutions. UOW excelled in every category of the ranking, making it the only university to appear in the top 20 in each of the five categories. The university's strongest performance was in fairness and opportunity, where it ranked fourth in Australia, underlining its commitment to providing access and support for all students. UOW also performed well in global reputation, ranking 12th, student satisfaction (13th), research (19th), and career impact (20th).

The University of Notre Dame Australia further reinforced its position as a leader in student satisfaction, ranking fourth nationally. In New South Wales, it ranked first, and in Western Australia, it ranked second. This strong performance in student satisfaction reflects the university’s focus on delivering a high-quality student experience, which is a key aspect of its appeal. Additionally, Notre Dame was recognized for its career preparation, ranking eighth in Australia for career outcomes. This reflects the university's dual focus on academic excellence and ensuring its graduates are well-prepared for their professional futures.

The University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) made a notable appearance in the AFR rankings, placing 15th overall in Australia. UniSQ also performed strongly in multiple categories, ranking in the top ten for several indicators. In the Greater Brisbane area, it ranked second, only behind the University of Queensland (UQ), surpassing other major universities such as Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology (QUT). This strong regional performance highlights UniSQ’s growing influence and its strong educational offerings, especially in terms of career outcomes and student satisfaction.

The University of New England (UNE), a regional university, also performed well, securing 24th place among Australia’s top 40 universities. UNE's ranking is particularly strong in the areas of fairness and opportunity, where it placed fifth nationally, and in career outcomes, where it ranked ninth. UNE's focus on accessibility and providing opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds has been a key factor in its success in these categories. The university’s overall score of 64 points across the five indicators indicates its strong all-round performance, making it a standout regional university in the country.
