The Department of Special Education at Vanderbilt University (Peabody) is ranked 1st in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, Vanderbilt Peabody College's doctoral programs in educational leadership and special education is ranked 1st in scholarly production among other departments at research universities in the United States, according to a report by Academic Analytics.

The Department of Special Education at UT Austin has distinguished itself in preparing professionals to work in an increasingly pluralistic and technological society. The University of Texas at Austin's College of Education, special education was ranked 4th overall and 3rd among public universities in the 2011 edition of America's Best Graduate Schools (US News).
