Shanghai Jiao Tong World Ranking 2012

Harvard University is ranked No. 1 globally in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2012 (compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University), followed by Stanford University in No. 2 and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in No. 3.

UCLA was ranked second among U.S. public universities and 12th among all universities, the same positions the campus held in the 2011 rankings. In addition to UCLA, five other UC campuses ranked in the top 50 overall: UC Berkeley (4th), UC San Diego (15th), UC San Francisco (18th), UC Santa Barbara (34th), UC Irvine (45th) and UC Davis (47th).

The University of Wisconsin-Madison was ranked 19th among world top universities. It is one of only six American public universities to place in the top 20 and the highest in the Big Ten. The University of Michigan was ranked 22nd.

Purdue University - West Lafayette was ranked 56th, up from 61st last year and 69th in 2010. In specialty rankings, Purdue was ranked 10th in engineering, 19th in chemistry, 20th in computer science and 47th in overall science.
